The Samsung Epic 4G from Sprint is part of the Samsung Galaxy S series, and one of the best high end smartphones built by Samsung which, runs on Android 2.1 Éclair and features a 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 processor with 1 GB ROM and 512MB of RAM. The Epic 4G has loads of nice features however, that doesn’t come without cost being, one of the most expensive phones Samsung has built today, priced higher than the Galaxy S II.

The main noticeable difference with the Epic 4G over most other smartphones is it’s slide out qwerty keyboard which, is a fantasic feature if you’re a person that finds writing emails or text messaging on a touch screen to cumbersome. On the other hand if you’re accustomed to ”Swype” typing then the qwerty slider may go unused. The Epic 4G also makes a perfect business phone being Microsoft® Office compatible and having corperate email, voice memos and of course the Sprint 4G network which, has excellent download and upload speeds (10x faster than 3G).

The Samsung Epic 4G also has support for the 3G network and has Wifi Hotspots enabled for connecting at home and at work. The 4.0 inch screen is super amoled for reduced power consumption, brighter viewing and less sunlight reflection at 480 x 800 pixels and 16 million colour depth, it has a wide viewing angle and a better contrast ratio than traditional LCD screens.

The user interface is built with Samsung’s TouchWiz and also has social hubs for instant messaging and access to all of the major IM applications like Google Talk and Microsoft Messenger. The rear facing autofocus camera is 5.0 megapixels with HD video recording in 720p, despite it’s small pixel size it’s surprisingly good quality. The forward facing VGA camera has two way voice and video compatibilty and can be installed with Qik app (upgrade required) for sharing between devices.

Other features of the Epic 4G include GPS Navigation with voice commands and Sprint TV for streaming high quality video and audio. The hardware includes a 3.5mm audio jack, 16GB micro SD card included with an option to upgrade to 32GB at extra cost and also HDMI for connecting the phone to other devices such as your TV. The battery life is pretty much standard to good lasting 6 hours talk time and up to 300 hours on standby. Using 4G on this smartphone will drain your battery quickly so it may be a good idea to buy additonal in-car chargers if you plan on using 4G alot. There seems to be alot of confusion between the Epic 4G and the Epic 4G Touch so read the additional reviews so your know the difference between the two!
